Eco Living…a weaving we will go
Eie Flud Blog
Eco living is a bit of a misnomer! Because, not one to miss an opportunity to be full of woe! Today is all about eco-dying!!
My personal view is that we all secretly derive a personal view of death and a possible afterlife - often strongly influenced by any religious persuasion - that may just be a shadowy thought in the back of our minds - something we take out and examine every now and again - and then put it back.
I could talk about this a great deal - but I won’t. Suffice to say, my personal view is a half baked mix of Christianity and old fashioned Paganism. Not so secretly, I admit to quite liking my view of the world hereafter - but what about the transition from here to there?
A few years ago now I saw advertised a 3 day course to learn how and to then make your own willow casket - and I was hooked. I’d always balked at having my final earthly journey take place in MDF. The MD and I have a standing joke that he will be weaving for England between my final gasp and the ash pile (clearly, the good go first!)
But, we might just save his ‘hands that do figures are as soft as a baby’s bottom’ - by just buying one: voila……

This one is from the Somerset Willow Company - and a quick yahoo search will bring up plenty of others - and I have to say I do think they look attractive. I’ve seen others that are less structured - more like moses baskets with a loose lid - which could be a bit unnerving for the congregation!
There is a suggestion that cremation may not be great for the environment - that a hessian type sack and burial in a green site under a tree might be more eco friendly.
We do have a number of green burial sites around us and they do have a tranquility to them and lack that spooky graveyard ambience - this one in Rutland - seems to take a mixed approach - which is quite informal.
Tongue in cheek aside, I do personally like the idea of a planned approach to my exit - and I am clearly drawn to an eco friendly affair. I intend to have lots of flowers ( I don’t believe they are wasted at funerals - like with weddings, flowers are just perfect) , pretty music, I want to be dressed well, I will of course wear perfume and I do want to hear some crying going on.
