Natural Burials and Green Funerals

by Ecoshakeflashlight

I live 3 blocks from one of the only Urban Sugar Shack…I think in Canada. I have spent many hours walking my dog, lying on logs, gazing up at the tree canopy, and … peering through the fence at the new burials in the cemetery beside the forest.

For years I’ve been wondering about contamination into the water system, from the cemetery. The tapped Maples draw their water from this area and are tapped for the production of maple syrup. Formeldihyde as we know if a carcinogen. But when I mentioned my thoughts to my dad, he replied, “Now isn’t that the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard”. He was talking about my idea.

When I asked the manager of the sugar shack whether the groundwater had ever been tested for contaminants. He told me that the Health Inspector gave the operation approval– as a food operation, which doesn’t test for groundwater contamination.

So perhaps I think too much about the dead bodies leaching into my favourite condiment. Since I pass the cemetery daily, I think of this alot, but I happy to have found the following services and products that provide some validation for my thoughts.

Natural Burial Co-operative, is Ontario’s first environmentally friendly burial alternative. Bodies are preserved without chemicals and are buried in biodegradable caskets

The Natural Burial Co-operative is creating a socially responsible, green business. They are looking for other people who are interested in natural burial other communities. Membership is $25, one time only. Click the links above to get further details.
