Natural burial group in Kapiti wants cemetery where bodies can be buried using methods encouraging fast decomposition

A group on the Kapiti Coast are hoping the local council will fast track a proposal to establish a natural burial site in the area.

The Kapiti District Council will decide whether to go ahead with the proposal at a meeting today.

Jocelyn Thornton from the Kapiti Natural Burial Association says natural burials involve bodies being interred with minimal use of embalming chemicals and in shallow graves to encourage fast decomposition. A native tree is planted in the grave site. Ms Thornton hopes the council will accept the proposal, so that the group can get on with planning a site.
