I don't think it is a "preoccupation with the afterlife" that has impelled mankind's elaborate ceremonial rituals. If we really believed that people were headed for heaven, why would we be so determined to protect their corpses from the natural processes of decay? Why care about the corporeal body's decay down in the ground when the soul is cavorting above?

Thank you for mentioning that "freeze drying" is a positive option rather than just promoting breen burials. Cemeteries occupy space & its a shame that green burials are encouraged. Human activities abuse the natural environment. I do not believe our corpses should occupy quality agricultural land resources which will be needed for future generations.

Wow! Something to talk about with my "kids" tho don't think they'll be thrilled. What about donating body to science, teaching hospital? Assume they cremate when through. The old Tibetans had the right idea - meditation, prayers at open burial on mountain, let vultures and animals finish off bodies. Funeral pyres as in India are also an option tho maybe not so clean for air. I like the idea of becoming part of a reef. JAceto
